Islanders who have been stranded abroad are asking for help.

Punta Gorda, Santos Guardiola.

Since the outbreak of COVID-19 and the shutdowns that occurred in the beginning of March, we have had a number of residents that are currently trapped abroad, either on the mainland or neighboring countries and unable to return back to the Bay Islands, the Underlying question is, when will they be able to return to their homes? This is the question that family members as well as the general population have been asking themselves.

Members of neighboring communities have gathered in Punta Gorda in the district of Santos Guardiola to ask the government for assistance in helping bring back their loved ones back to the Island.

The Municipal Councilor of Santos Guardiola, Alex Avila, who participated in the meeting, understood the purpose of the meeting was to find ways to reunite our Mothers, Fathers, Sisters and Brothers back to the Island to care for their families and especially the children, who have not seen them since the quarantine began. There are almost Fifty (50) business owners and professionals who live their lives in our department, who are currently abroad in Tegucigalpa, San Pedro Sula, La Ceiba, Colon and in surrounding other areas.

Councilor Avila acknowledged that the return of the residents back to Roatan would have to comply with all the biosafety measure, currently in place. Compliance with the use of Masks, Gloves and in a designated quarantine area for monitoring.

Permanent Contingency Commission (COPECO), members were also in attendance in the meetings as well as other Health Authorities, Governor, Mayor, who all agreed to support the ultimate goal of reuniting the estranged loved ones back their homes in the island, once the procedure is done in the correct way and they get responses from the authorities at the highest level.
